LEVI DAY USES CLAKE TO QUALIFY FOR AUSTRALIAN 2009 MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX

After being granted a wild card entry for the 2009 Australian Motorcycle GP in the 125 class, South Australian Levi Day was looking for ways to improve his speed in order to qualify within 107% of the fastest riders time. This is not easy when you consider that the international riders are vastly more experienced and are riding bikes that are worth up to 10 times as much and have far better support. With just 6 weeks to go before the biggest event in Levi's relatively short (3 year) racing career Levi and his team, RACETRIX tested the CLAKE on his RS125 Honda and Levi quickly adapted and discovered the advantages of using the CLAKE. I offered to help out in the pits, with my main duties being making any changes to the CLAKE set up that Levi wanted. Despite having lots of suspension set up problems and a high speed crash at Phillip Islands notorious turn one, Levi achieved the seemingly impossible and qualified. On race day we were all feeling quietly confident of a good result, especially when Levi crossed the finishing line completing the morning warm up session posting some good lap times in the process. Then disaster stuck, for some reason a rider behind Levi had not realised the session was over and ploughed into Levi at turn two. Fortunately Levi was not too badly hurt and was cleared to race by the medical crew, but the bike, when it finally arrived was not so lucky. The Race Technical guys promptly appeared and declared the frame a write off, thankfully one of the team had spare frame. We now had 90 Min's left to rebuild the bike to make the starting grid. I Suddenly found myself being part of a team of people hell bent on achieving what seemed impossible. Surprisingly, given the extensive damage to the rest of the bike the CLAKE had survived the crash but the bracket that held the remote reservoir (a special set up we used due to the extreme angle of the handle bars on the RS125) was broken and we simply did not have the time to make one so the decision was made not to run the CLAKE system. I was personally very disappointed with this decision but it ended up being the right one given that Levi only just made the grid, we were still working on the bike as it was wheeled off the work stand. Levi was lapping about 1.5 seconds off his previous pace and finished in last place, but had been catching up to two riders in front in the closing stages of the race. By finishing he had done better than 6 other riders in the class. Under the circumstances I think the fact that Levi finished at all is a great testament to Levi's skill and determination. Although this was not the best debut for the CLAKE in GP racing the CLAKE generated a huge amount of interest in the paddock, some of which was from a couple of the top motogp teams, watch this space! Many Thanks to the team at Racetrix in particular Angelo and Gesmond and of course Levi firstly for choosing to run the CLAKE and secondly for allowing me to be part of of this very special event.
